This speech is Project 1 “The Ice Breaker” from Basic Communicator Manual. The objectives of this speech are:

  • To begin speaking before an audience.
  • To discover speaking skills you already have and skills that need some attention.

The timing for this speech is 4-6 mins.

This is my debut speech. I practically tried to memorize the script word by word. This was bad because firstly your speech would not sound naturally and conversational, and second you tend to get stuck if you forgot some lines. I have observed this happen to other speakers who tried to memorize their script.

After doing quite a number of speeches, I think I come to realize that we really need to know why we want to speak. Basically, we want our audience to be entertained, inspired, motivated or informed, so that they would find your speech valuable. So, it is important to craft the speech and presentation with the goals in mind. So, we should cut out all the unnecessary fats in the speech.

This speech was given on the Oct 2005 at the CCK TMC Chapter Meeting.

“Wow, my first public speaking project! To reduce my nervousness, I’ve rehearsed the speech many times. Its not so scary after all because the people at CCK TMC are all very friendly. Yes, I’ve joined a great Club!” ~ 9 Sep 2004
